Early Greek copies of the Hebrew Scriptures sometimes preserved God’s name using ΙΑΩ or the Hebrew letters יהוה. However, many later Greek manuscripts replaced the divine name with the title Kyrios (“Lord”). Scholars often believe this change developed between the 1st and 3rd centuries CE, after the apostolic period, as copying traditions gradually substituted a title for the personal name.
