Nyasia’s Gallaudet journey has been one of self-discovery, leadership, and heart. From her first class on Deafhood, cheering on the sidelines, taking the lead in clubs and campus programs, she made every opportunity her own.

She served as Vice President of the Black Student Union, Youth Programs ambassador and advocate, mentor, Student Body Government representative, and more! Throughout it all, she remained focused on her dream: helping her hometown community in Springfield, MA.

Her major in Social Work and minor in Psychology reflect her deep commitment to making a difference.

Nyasia found her identity, her voice, and her purpose—and now she’s ready to change lives.

Transcript: I’m from Springfield, Massachusetts, hey to all my folks in Massachusetts! I come from a mainstream background, I graduated from Willie Ross School for the Deaf where my former principal introduced us to ASL classes. In my time before that, I didn't have access to ASL classes, so it's nice that they offer them now! They also encouraged us to be involved with different academic competitions and social activities.

My first class was Vee 101, this was my favorite topic that I could really get into - Deafhood. That's when I really started to learn more about myself, my identity, and what majors I wanted to learn more about. That class truly encouraged me to be involved in different things on campus.

I became a cheerleader for 3 years in a row. I continued to grow as my various roles expanded. They include: being the vice president of the Black Student Union (BSU) for a semester, a Youth Programs ambassador, a Youth Programs advocate, and a Vee mentor. I’ve also been a SAC representative for the cheerleading team, as well as an SBG representative for the SAC. I’ve also been a summer youth programs camp counselor and a creative team member for the Dean's office. I know it’s a lot, but it’s been worth it! Eventually, I decided to choose to major in social work with a minor in psychology. I’m focused on working with children and people with disabilities in social services or as a school social worker in my hometown. These opportunities helped me grow, lead, and discover my purpose. I made them my own!

Through it all, I valued my experiences and my identity. I found myself! My name is Nyasia, and I'm ready for what's next!
