Welcome to the September 22, 2023 issue of Hi5! We are now one month into the fall semester, and it is already feeling like fall!

Here are our Top Five stories.

1
On campus and across the nation, we are celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. At Gallaudet, our celebration of the histories, cultures, and contributions of Hispanic/Latine Americans during this period is uniquely enhanced by the infusion of Deafcentric perspectives. Watch for events throughout the month, many of them hosted by Nuestra Casa, our new Center for Latine Deaf Studies. And even if you are not local to Gallaudet, celebrate with us!

We have some very happy news! Storm Smith, Director of Storytelling in the Office of University Communications, has been named one to Ad Age’s 40 Under 40 for 2023. This list honors marketing and media trailblazers who have made significant contributions to the worlds of media, technology, advertising, or marketing within the last year. Congratulations, Storm!

Two students in our Accessible Human-Centered Computing program have been selected as Tikkun Olam Makers – TOM – Fellows for 2023-2024. Tikkun Olam means “to repair the world” in Hebrew. They attended a kickoff event last month in Atlanta, and built a special seat for children who struggle with their legs. Their Toddler Mobility Trainer, made from wood, rubber, foam, and fabric, is already benefiting a toddler who cannot walk. Read more on our website!

Last Thursday, the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) Task Force to Prevent Digital Discrimination held a Public Listening Session on the Gallaudet campus about broadband access. FCC chair Jessica Rosenworcel and President Cordano opened the event, and then two panels comprised of experts in technology accessibility, including Dr. Christian Vogler, discussed the experiences of disabled people in accessing broadband, as well as solutions for addressing these challenges.

Our alumni are pushing the limits of human endeavor! Read about Jackie Kanekuni, who has run half marathons in all 50 states, and Brian Bennett and Travis Clevenger, who completed the Ironman Maryland last Sunday! The Ironman is a 140.6 mile swim-bike-run competition. Congratulations to all!

On our website, we also have a story about one student and one alumna who participated in pageants over the summer. Homecoming is the weekend of October 20-22. Watch for more information in the coming weeks.

Hi5 comes out biwekly during the academic year. The next issue of Hi5 will be on Friday, October 6. In the meantime, stay up to date by following us at @GallaudetU on our social media platforms. If you have a story that you feel would be a good fit for Hi5 or social media, share it with us at gu.live/request.
We will see you again in two weeks!
