When it comes to Deaf people and communication, one of the most painful situations is when Deaf parents and their Kodas (Kids of Deaf Adults - hearing children) aren’t able to communicate because the Kodas don’t sign ASL. There are different reasons this happens. Sometimes one or both Deaf parents choose to use their voices and spoken English with their hearing children, instead of signing and giving them full access to ASL. Sometimes one parent is hearing and doesn’t sign at all or consistently with the hearing children, leaving out the Deaf parent. When Kodas don’t develop fluency in ASL, this hurts the parent-child relationship, and both parties suffer. Reggie shares his story about struggling to communicate with his young Koda. If you have experienced communication barriers with a Koda, or if you have tips on dealing with this type of situation, feel free to comment below.
