Melmira gets sneak peek of NYC play created by deaf actors: “TRASH”

See it at PAC NYC March 7–28. Tickets: Link

MELMIRA: I’m here watching a sneak peek of “TRASH.”

It is a play that will start soon in New York City. Featuring a deaf and hearing cast.

This play was co-written by them. It gives a perspective on what it is like to be deaf in a hearing world.

ANDREW MORRILL: I’m Andrew Morrill, one of the co-writers. I play the character of Tim.

JAMES CAVERLY: I’m James Caverly. I play Jake.

ANDREW: How did this come to be? In 2021, we were at a small festival in Berkeley called “Radical Acts.” The goal of the festival was to do something radical, something different from what we normally see in the theater world. So we…

JAMES: We wanted to make a show that feels like it’s flipped around. We are used to deaf people sitting in a show. So this experience flips it to have hearing people see this process.

MELMIRA: Personally, after seeing some sneak peeks…

ANDREW: Very short!

MELMIRA: It is hilarious. I can’t wait to see it when it opens, to see it as a full production.

Here are the two directors.

NATHANIEL P. CLARIDAD: The script is really funny. I want both hearing and deaf audiences to have similar experiences.

AMELIA HENSLEY: I’m so excited to be a part of this, especially working with him! He’s amazing. I’m the associate director and I already saw James and Andrew working on the script from the beginning. I remember being at a cafe and reading and signing the script and they would start arguing. I just sat and watched! Now it’s here! Wow! That process was beautiful.

MELMIRA: Do you get goosebumps?

AMELIA: Oh yes! Incredibly proud.

MELMIRA: Are you as curious as I am about watching “TRASH?” Come and watch it in NYC! At the Perelman Performing Arts Center (PAC). Previews start March 7th. The play opens March 13th. For more information and how to buy tickets, the link is below.
