It means to stop, to cease, to rest. In Genesis 2, it describes what God did. It does not say: • Adam kept a Sabbath • Abraham kept a Sabbath • Noah kept a Sabbath • Anyone was commanded to keep a weekly Sabbath There is no command in Genesis. ⸻ 📖 When Does “Sabbath” Become a Law? The Hebrew noun: שַׁבָּת (shabbāth) 👉 This is a noun. It means Sabbath (a specific day). This noun appears clearly later — especially in: • Exodus 16 (manna instruction) • Exodus 31:16–17 Exodus 31 says the Sabbath was: “a sign between Me and the sons of Israel.” That is covenant language. It was given to Israel, not Abraham, not Noah, not all mankind. ⸻ 🎯 Key Point Genesis 2 = verb (God rested). Exodus 16 & 31 = noun (Sabbath as covenant sign). HRM and SDA try to read the Law of Sinai back into Genesis — but the text does not say that. The Bible is silent about any Sabbath law before Moses.
