Judaism: sin as wrong action, not a broken nature In Judaism, sin (often called chet) literally means “missing the mark.” Key ideas: Humans are not born sinful Everyone has free will (the yetzer hatov – good inclination, and yetzer hara – selfish inclination) Sin is about what you do, not who you are How sin works in Judaism: You sin by breaking God’s commandments (the mitzvot) Most sins are between a person and God or between people No concept of inherited “original sin” How sin is dealt with: Repentance (teshuvah): recognizing the wrong, stopping it, making amends, and committing to change Yom Kippur is the big annual day of atonement No need for a mediator or sacrifice today — repentance, prayer, and good deeds are enough 👉 In short: You mess up → you take responsibility → you fix it. Christianity: sin as a condition that needs rescue Christianity keeps the idea of wrongdoing, but adds a deeper layer. Key ideas: Humans inherit a sinful condition (original sin, from Adam and Eve) Sin separates humans from God Even good people can’t fully fix this separation on their own How sin works in Christianity: Sin includes actions and inner states (thoughts, intentions) Everyone is in need of salvation The law shows what’s right, but can’t fully save How sin is dealt with: Jesus’ death and resurrection atone for sin Forgiveness comes through faith, repentance, and grace Jesus acts as mediator between God and humans 👉 In short: You’re broken → you can’t fully fix it → God rescues you.
