In John 5, Jesus shows that the real issue was not “more Sabbath rule-keeping,” but heart and faith—the leaders claimed to believe Moses, yet they rejected the Messiah that Moses’ writings pointed to. Israel was under the Mosaic Law then (so Sabbath applied to them), but after Jesus’ death Christians are not under that covenant, so they are not judged by Sabbaths (Col. 2:16) and are discharged from the Law (Rom. 7:6).
