Jane Goodall, who studied primates and was an environmental advocate, passed away at the age of 91 from natural causes. When she was young, she studied chimpanzees in the wild and did research that showed chimpanzees had individual personalities and could make and use their own tools. She showed how humans and chimpanzees are similar in many ways, such as kissing, holding hands, patting on the back, or being violent and killing rivals. In the 1970s, Goodall worked with a researcher who did work with Washoe, a chimpanzee who could sign certain words or concepts. Goodall also visited Koko, a gorilla who knew how to sign certain phrases or concepts. She founded the Jane Goodall Institute in D.C., which aims to improve the treatment and understanding of primates and protect their habitats.
