From 1866 to 1869, Dundurn Castle housed the Upper Canada Institute for the Deaf and Dumb (also referred to as the Deaf and Dumb Institution). The institution was founded by John Barrett McGann in 1858 in Toronto and later relocated to Dundurn as the school expanded. Eighty-one deaf students and ten blind students were accommodated at the castle during this period.
