Join me for a candid and thought-provoking discussion on the state of deaf education in the U.S. I contend that the current system is failing deaf students, and the U.S. Department of Education has played a role, particularly due to underfunding from Congress. We've seen a decline since the 1980s, and it's time for a major overhaul.
Drawing inspiration from certain political viewpoints (with a touch of sarcasm!), I challenge the status quo: why not decentralize education to the states, with one crucial exception? My bold proposal? Let's dismantle the current DoED and create a dedicated U.S. Department of Deaf Education. With Gallaudet University now led by a deaf president, the next logical step is a Deaf Deputy Secretary of Education.
This isn't just about fixing a broken system; it's about pioneering a drastic, out-of-the-box change that could revolutionize deaf education not only in the USA but resonate across North America and around the world.
