Dr. Mike Kemp was a full professor in the Department of American Sign Language and Deaf Studies at Gallaudet University. He was a prominent figure in the field, known for his extensive experience teaching ASL and training sign language teachers globally.
He taught ASL for 30+ years and taught visual gestural communication and sign language teacher training across the US and internationally in various countries. He also chaired three departments at Gallaudet before stepping down to focus on teaching.
Dr. Kemp was the author of "Fundamentals of Evaluating Sign Language Programs: a checklist" and "Communication in Gestures: a trainer's manual." He held a B.A. in Sociology from Gallaudet University, an M.Ed. in Deaf Education from McDaniel College, and an Ed.D. in Administration in Higher Education from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. His dissertation was titled "A Comparison of the Simultaneous Method Evaluation and the Sign Communication Proficiency Interview (SCPI)."
He passed away on November 24, 2008.
