AP NEWS: 2 staff members of Israeli Embassy killed in shooting near Jewish museum in DC

AP News said in Washington D.C., a gunman shot and killed two people who were leaving an event at the Capital Jewish Museum that celebrated young diplomats.

The deceased people were staff members of the Israeli Embassy, Yaron Lischinsky (Israeli) and Sarah Milgrim (American, Kansas). They were a young couple who were expected to be engaged.

Police said the suspect is a 31-year-old man from Chicago, Elias Rodriguez. He was pacing outside of the museum, wearing a suit and slacks, before he allegedly approached a a group of four people and opened fire. He then walked into the museum. A witness from inside the museum said people heard gunshots and initially thought the man who walked in needed help, but when police arrived, that man pulled out a red keffiyeh, a Palestinian headscarf, and yelled, “Free, free Palestine.”

The FBI said early indicators are that this is an act of targeted violence.

AP said the attack prompted Israeli missions to beef up their security and lower their flags to half-staff.

This violent incident is happening with the backdrop of an increasingly deadly war in Israel-Gaza.
