Transcript: I don't know if you are serious about protecting ASL, the very breath of our Deaf life. ASDB, Phoenix Day School for the Deaf, Missouri School for the Deaf, NCSD, ENCSD, OSD, WSD, St. Rita School for the Deaf, and Illinois School for the Deaf are now on the brink of closing down. The enrollment at Gallaudet University, our only Deaf university in the world, is now virtually deflated.
I am not saying that mainstreamed schools are without value. These Deaf programs are indispensable, and Deaf schools are equally important!
You Deaf content creators, influencers: are your 60-second videos about fun, fanciful, and "popcorn-ish" topics more important while Deaf schools are dying? Remember the Milan 1880 conference, famously known as the ICED (International Congress on the Education of the Deaf). Use our platforms, both new and old school, to raise awareness!
ICED is now taking place in Rome, Italy this summer for its 24th conference. Their five-day conference agenda needs prioritizing on saving Deaf schools across the country. All walks of Deaf life, we must fight with every fiber of our bodies!
