The hometown of George Ropes, Jr. - a Deaf painter the Shipwrecked Historians favored and relied on for their research on the ships.
Laurent Clerc met Ropes first in 1816 and described him as a brilliant Deaf man who could converse in a language of signs. George succumbed to illness in 1819.
