Transcript:
I am pleased to announce that Gallaudet University will commence a national search for a permanent provost this fall. Currently, Dr. Jeffrey W. Lewis, ’76, is the interim provost and has held this position since April 2020. He graciously agreed to extend his service from his original two-year term to three years in order to ensure a smooth transition during the implementation of the Academic Affairs restructuring and continuing work on The Gallaudet Promise, our long-term strategic vision. His term expires at the end of June 2023.

Over the last few months, I have held separate meetings with Dr. Lewis, faculty leadership, and a faculty advisory group. The purpose of those meetings was to review the provost job description and consider strategic questions including the context within which the new provost will be leading, the most important priorities for the new provost, and the nature of the job search itself. Those conversations informed the shaping of the job description and the search process.

A search committee is being formed and the process will ensure engagement of key stakeholders from our campus community, including faculty, staff within Academic Affairs, and students. To my delight, Dr. Brian Greenwald, ’96, and Dr. Daniel Koo, G-’97, have accepted the invitation to co-chair the search committee.

Gallaudet is searching for a provost that will advance our academic mission and support all students and faculty as we further The Gallaudet Promise in the true spirit of shared governance.

The provost will lead the Division of Academic Affairs, including Gallaudet’s five multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary schools; research and innovation to advance the understanding and influencing of policies that impact the deaf and hard of hearing community, and career success for our students. Important qualities include being able to communicate bilingually in American Sign Language and English, and leading and supporting the faculty in their development of a curriculum of excellence and a dynamic environment for a learning community that addresses the needs of a diverse student body.

Gallaudet University is the premier university for deaf, hard of hearing, and deafblind students from all over the world. It is the only university in the world that offers a true bilingual education in American Sign Language and English. Please view the job posting here, and share it widely.

We look forward to finding our next Provost, one who is as excited as we are about Gallaudet University’s commitment to bilingual learning across the lifespan, belonging and equity, and innovating for impact.
