Deaf Health Communication and Quality of Life Center (DHCQoL), Deaf Seniors of America (DSA), and the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) are thrilled to announce a grant collaboration project.

VIDEO DESC & TRANSCRIPT: Three people stand next to each other, facing the camera, while standing in front of a painted mural.

POORNA: I'm Poorna Kushalnagar, Director of DHCQoL Center at Gallaudet University. I am also the principal investigator on several grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Earlier this year, my lab applied and received several grants. I knew I had to partner with these two (point to Howard and Al) on two grants from the National Institute on Aging (NIA) and Office of Research on Women’s Health (ORWH).

HOWARD: I'm Howard Rosenblum, CEO of the NAD. I’m excited to have the opportunity to work with Gallaudet’s Deaf Health Center and DSA on several projects.

AL: I'm Al Sonnenstrahl, DSA President. DSA is also excited to work closely with the NAD and Gallaudet University’s Deaf Health Center.

POORNA: The two grant awards from NIA and ORWH stemmed from research in my lab and my work with the NAD-DSA Task Force on Aging. We recognize a need to create accessible resource for deaf caregivers who care for people with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias. One of the two grants support this. The other grant focuses on information about deaf women’s health related to osteoporosis, oral health, nutrition, and hysterectomy.

HOWARD: Part of our priority is to increase awareness – especially for deaf seniors and deaf women aged 40s and up. To address this, the NAD will produce ASL videos to share these important topics in ASL by posting weekly health related facts on social media. These videos will also be available on NAD.org.

AL: And DSA will share these videos and have it available on deafseniors.us.

POORNA: Same, Deaf Health lab at Gallaudet will be sharing the NAD’s weekly posts on our page as well. Our goal is to share information on health-related issues in our language – ASL. This is important work so I’m thrilled all three of us are working together.

All: Thank you.
