Alder Springs is a nonprofit community designed for the unique needs of seniors, particularly for the deaf and blind. It is located near the heart of charming downtown Morganton, NC, home of the North Carolina School for the Deaf (NCSD) and adjacent to Interstate 40 which traverses the US from the Atlantic to the Pacific. The community is an independent living facility featuring moderately affordable one- and two-bedroom units with two fully handicap accessible apartments. Advanced technologies throughout facilitate communication and movement and assure safety and security. Alder Springs is the nation's first nonprofit 501(c)(3) community designed especially for the deaf and blind. It is developed by and is owned by the North Carolina School for the Deaf at Morganton Foundation and funded entirely by private donations, grants, and loans. (It is not a HUD project; no government funding is involved.) Occupancy revenues from Alder Springs will be used for the community's operating costs, maintenance, repayment of loans, and expansion. All remaining funds will be used to enrich the educational experiences of students at the NC School for the Deaf.
