VIDEO DESC & TRANSCRIPT: Howard A. Rosenblum is sitting at his desk. The NAD logo appears on bottom right corner as a watermark.

HOWARD: We love going to the movies, it's an enjoyable experience to watch them on the big screen. It's almost time for the Oscars, which recognizes and awards the best actors and best movies. I'm excited that we have more and more deaf and hard of hearing actors in the movies! Yet we still have situations with some movies where hearing actors are being cast for deaf roles. Those hearing actors are not authentic, as they are not able to truly convey Deaf Culture and be fully expressive in sign language. Hearing actors cannot authentically portray a deaf character with learning a few signs and pretending to be deaf. This misappropriation must stop. We have a list that highlights hearing actors that have misappropriated deaf roles as well as directors who have cast hearing actors for these roles. Deaf actors have been striving to get into acting roles for many years! They've put in hard work and auditioned and yet they are too often ignored. We have a separate list that highlights #DeafTalent. We look forward to that list growing with many more deaf actors in new roles. From now on, all deaf characters in movies should be portrayed by deaf actors, and hearing actors must stop taking deaf roles.
