What to do when you think you face a legal situation? #AskHoward

HOWARD: Even today, deaf and hard of hearing people still face challenges, barriers, and discrimination in different situations. Some face problems at the doctor's office, the hospital, with lawyers, in a courtroom, with law enforcement, at a university, in the workplace, in an educational setting, and many more situations. While you can sue when there is discrimination, keep in mind that process is very lengthy and even though I love to sue, it can take up to several years to get results. Often deaf people face an issue and need immediate help. The first thing you can do is to look at the advocacy letters on the NAD website. We've developed a letter for each possible situation. We have a letter for problems at the doctor's office. We also have a letter for hospitals. We have a letter for the courtroom if you are access. We have a letter for when you are denied access by a lawyer, a university, and other places. These advocacy letters are available for you to show those who are denying you access. It is our hope that these letters help improve your situation. If you are still denied access or still face discrimination-- actually, let me go back. If you have a success story with these letters, please let us know! We'd like to know about your positive stories because of your use of the advocacy letters. But if you still face discrimination after showing the advocacy letter, you can contact the NAD Legal Team. Some cases are not the kind that we can handle. For example, if you have an issue with immigration for example, you need someone who is an immigration law expert. If you are looking for a divorce attorney, bankruptcy attorney, or if you're buying a house, writing a will -- these are all important issues that we are not experts for those kinds of cases here at the NAD. You can still contact us and we can refer you to a deaf or deaf-friendly lawyer. Even if you're not sure if your situation is the right legal issue for the NAD, contact us anyway. We will refer you to another lawyer who can help you if we are not a good fit for your case so you can find the right lawyer; we try our best! If your situation involves discrimination because you are deaf, please contact us. Keep in mind we're not able to take all cases. The NAD Legal Team will review your case and someone will contact you to gather all information we need to determine whether or not we can and will take your case. We take cases that changes the system; other cases that are still good but may not affect system change, we will refer you to a deaf or deaf-friendly lawyer that can help your case.
