Hello all!

This is Chris Haulmark, running for US House of Representatives in Kansas’s Third Congressional District.

This morning we made a vlog with no captions for viewers who don’t know American Sign Language.

Was it our intention to exclude those who are unable to understand American Sign Language?

No, not at all- not really.

I wanted to draw in all the Deaf and American Sign Language-using community to get involved in our campaign to see what happened last Saturday in order to understand the nature of the event.

Also, adding English video captions is a very complicated process.

We want to give a visualization:

Those who are fluent speakers and auditory listeners can add captions using automatic online captioning programs, such as those offered by YouTube, which is easily understood.

By the way, even YouTube’s subtitling program is not 100% accurate.

Not at all!

Some editing and modification is necessary to ensure correct terms, correct phrases, correct punctuations, okay.

Now that’s “Hearing privilege” that I don’t have.

Right now, no automated program is able to watch my American Sign Language speeches and caption what I sign.

Boy, I wish that were possible!

Alas, there is none available.

So, consequently, we tend to make our vlogs in the morning or at noontime, and pass it on to our captioning team which takes around two to four hours for them to interpret what I sign.

Furthermore, I must sign a bit slower in order for the captions to pop up on the screen in perfectly synchronized order for each individual signed phrase that I do.

Get that?

That’s how it all works!

Yeah, what a complex and difficult task, which is quite time-consuming for adding the English captions.

And our campaign team is in agreement to do this EVERY DAY!

Until August 7, 2018!

Which is Kansas Democratic Party's 2018 primary election date.

Got it?

Why do this?

This way, non-ASL using viewers can watch and learn about who Chris Haulmark is, and get the whole picture of what our campaign is all about.
