Hello everyone!

This is Chris Haulmark, running for US House of Representatives in Kansas’s Third Congressional District.

Today, we will talk about yesterday- what happened with the tv interview with Shayla.

What an amazing woman! So easy to interact with and understand!

We talked about several topics; she asked great questions!

Yeah, the interview was about 30 minutes, but we can see the online clip is around close to three minutes long- perfect for showing the world an exposure on our campaign dream and our Deaf life.

That’s a good start for our campaign.

Okay, hmm… I want to announce that we’ve hit some ongoing obstacles with the idea of “Can Deaf people run for Congress and win?”

And also: “Can Deaf people work in Congress?” Questions like that.

Many people still dismiss the idea that we Deaf people can accomplish much.

Y’know, that’s not realistic. They don’t see me as the kind of person I am, or what I’m truly capable of.

They don’t quite understand how Deaf people have a DIVERSITY of backgrounds, education, knowledge, abilities, all of that.

I’ve tried to continuously educate so many people, every single day.

One critical element is professional American Sign Language interpreting needs.

Some people have mentioned that they should not pay nor be responsible for paying the professional American Sign Language interpreter.

Yeah, that happens.

And they have a vision that American Sign Language is a simple language, so that if a low-quality, low-cost “signer” is obtained, it’s good enough for everything.

But, of course, they do not understand.

*thinking*

So I want to introduce an analogy for some viewers to understand and recognize the issue of why it’s so important to get the BEST quality American Sign Language interpreters.

Imagine Stephen King, the writer- a famous author who has consistently created numerous best-sellers, and with his impressive top-notch writing talent.

Imagine that he wrote one excellent book, okay…

And another country wanted that book rewritten in THEIR (foreign to us) language…

*thinking* what’d you think is the best translation solution to offer?

Get a low-quality, cheap translator to translate Stephen King’s complex English prose into their (foreign to us) language?

Would those readers be affected with the same emotions and responses as English readers are intensively impacted when reading his book??

Think about that…

Do you...agree?

No, I certainly don’t.

I think the publisher should get a high-quality translator who can carefully take the time
to completely translate perfectly every concept, including the correct phrases and nuances that impact the foreign language readers?

So they are also inspired and truly impacted by HIS HIGHLY SKILLED writing style?

Get it? Get the concept?

Yet, with a live American Sign Language interpreter, what a daunting task!

Yes, it’s tough because they work on the fly, continuously translating at fast speed while Deaf people are signing, or while a person who is not Deaf is speaking, and the interpreter interprets to American Sign Language for the Deaf audience to watch and comprehend.

THAT’S why high-quality top-notch American Sign Language interpreters are VERY important!

Yes indeed, it’s worth the investment!

I see that idea when people invest in a good interpreter, they are truly investing in removing disempowerment from our multicultural society, showing proof to all other disability groups and fellow marginalized groups that their allies truly do actively invest in reducing disempowerment bit by bit.

Wow, what an incredible impact for improving our country to become more progressive towards a more perfect union.

Let’s make it happen!
