Hello!

This is Chris Haulmark, running for US House of Representatives in Kansasâ€™s Third Congressional District.

Today, I want to give my heartfelt deepest condolences to the friends and families of the victims killed and injured in the two recent mass shootings: Yesterday morning in Lawrence, Kansas where three were killed and two were hospitalized, and in Las Vegas during last nightâ€™s concert, where at least 58 people were killed and over 500 people injured.

Wow! Thatâ€™s so tragic!

And thatâ€™s one of the worst nonmilitary mass shooting to happen in America today!

*deep sigh*

Today, we wonâ€™t discuss those two events right now, as we feel itâ€™s too early, and I prefer to gather all information, review it, and analyze it before presenting my viewpoint on both shooting incidents, okay?

So today we will discuss the impressive American Civil Liberties Union of Kansas.

Yesterday afternoon, the ACLU hosted an event in Lawrence, Kansas regarding the voter suppression that Kansasâ€™s evil Secretary of State Kris Kobach has been doing,
which has prevented many people from voting, while concurrently, the reviled Trump administration has installed Secretary Kobach to a position with Orwellian duties involving â€œprotecting against voter fraud,â€ whatever incompetency that does.

As I watched the ACLU event on its Facebook feed it was a thrill to see that closed-captioning was provided!

Whether or not my campaign had a role in their providing that accommodation, I do not yet know.

Two days ago, I emailed ACLU and requested they add captioning and having visible American Sign Language interpreting team on their videos.

This was for full and complete access to their videos, not just for me, but also for the entire Deaf and Hard of Hearing community to watch, too.

Just so it happens yesterday, right before the event, I checked with the ACLU to verify whether or not captions would be provided.

They wholeheartedly confirmed: oh yes!

Their video would be captioned and an American Sign Language interpreting team has been hired.

While watching the video, the American Sign Language interpreting team wasnâ€™t visible, yet there was LIVE captioning- WOW! LIVE captioning!

I am truly impressed with the ACLUâ€™s ability and willingness in achieving full and complete accessibility!

Now we would like to share insight on Kansas City Starâ€™s resistance to my attempts in contacting them, requesting that captions be added to their live videos.

We did speak with a spokesperson, Sam Mellinger, the Kansas City Starâ€™s sports editor.

We commented that there was no captioning in his live video that had taken place while he was seated in a car, sharing his commentary.

We were curious on what the commentary was about, and how we could be involved.

In response to my comment under the Kansas City Starâ€™s Facebook posting expressing disappointment in the lack of captioning, Mr. Mellinger replied, encouraging us to send him an email to discuss it.

We dutifully submitted an email describing how Facebook has the ability to add captions to its Live videos.

We also shared links to other successfully captioned Facebook Live videos.
