JOE: Hi! I’m Joe Murray and I am the Vice President of the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD). I’ve been involved with WFD for 21 years, with support from the NAD. I wanted to take a moment to share with you all about this week.

JOE: International Week of the Deaf (IWD) is happening this week! This yearly event has been happening since 1958. The purpose behind this week is to allow deaf communities from all over the world, whether they represent a local, state, national, or international level organization, to work together and bring attention to deaf and hard of hearing people’s rights. WFD picked that specific week in September because WFD was established during that week in 1951. IWD allows anyone and everyone to host different kinds of events and activities, whether it’s a march, a meeting with government officials to discuss our rights, or other advocacy activities, which could include public awareness. Starting a few years ago, WFD decided to introduce a theme for the week. This year’s theme is “With Sign Language, I Am Equal.” By using sign language with deaf children, they have equal access to education. With sign language, we have full access to information. With sign language, we can appreciate culture, theater, and more. With sign language interpreters, we have full access to society. With sign language, we are given full equality! I encourage you to do something for IWD in your community this week. We must promote and recognize sign language, this is important for the deaf community and all deaf people. Have a great week!

ON SCREEN GRAPHIC: A soft fade of orange mosiac tiles are in the background, with blue hands signing "equal". Text appears in the foreground, "WITH SIGN LANGUAGE, I AM EQUAL."
