Melissa: I'm here in the heart of San Francisco, California in the Mission District at the famous restaurant Mozzeria. Mozzeria is famous for their pizza. This is how you sign pizza in Italy. This is a Deaf owned business run by husband and wife team Russ and Melody Stein. Mozzeria started in December 2011, which means this December, they will be celebrating their 5th year!

Melissa: I'm excited to come and check out their business while sampling their delicious pizza! Ready to join me? Let’s go!

Melissa: I'm here with Melody, one of the co-owners of Mozzeria.

Melody: Hi! I'm excited to be here with DTV News!

Melissa: I'm excited to be here too! So this December it'll be 5 years! Wow - how do you feel about all you've done in that time?

Melody: To be honest, it doesn't feel like five years, it feels like it was just recently when we opened. I feel like we still have a lot to accomplish.

Melissa: People always say they have to "check out" Mozzeria, but they keep coming back! Why do you think that is?

Melody: This is the only fully Deaf restaurant here run by a Deaf staff, so I think people want to continue coming to enjoy the experience and eat the pizza while taking in the atmosphere.

Melissa: I noticed the sign over here - Vera Napoletana. Can you explain that for us?

Melody: Yes! It’s VPN for short. Back then in Italy, they were famous for their pizza, and they set up an organization to officially trademark their specific kind of pizza. They noticed that all over the world, businesses were setting up and claiming to be official Neapolitan pizza, but they weren’t authentic, so they wanted to ensure that people got the right experience, having an authentic taste of Italian pizza, so to protect the authenticity of the Neapolitan experience, they started an official certification process where businesses need to become certified in order to accurately represent Neapolitan pizza.

Melissa: Wow, so it's authentic here, some serious pizza.

Melody: Yes, for sure!

Melissa: Yay! Well I'm looking forward to tasting the pizza - I'm actually ready to eat now!

Melody: Yes she's going to try and make pizza!

Melissa: Yes I am!

Melody: Maybe I'll end up offering her a job here at Mozzeria!

Melissa: Hmm...maybe I’ll have to move here!

Melissa: Good thing I have this - I'm wearing a white shirt, so I’m going to need this!

Melody: (Yes she needs this!)

Amanda: Be careful not to touch the crust - if you do, the pizza will flatten.

Melissa: Oh I see, okay. No, I want thicker crust!

Melissa: Can you show me that again?

Amanda: Be careful!

Melissa: Oh no, I made a hole! I don't think I can work here after all.

Amanda: Spread the sauce evenly.

Amanda: I usually put 3, 4, 3 pieces.

Melissa: Oooh, basil!

Melissa: How long do you leave the pizza in?

Amanda: 90 seconds.

Melissa: Wow that's all? That’s fast!

Amanda: Yep, 850 degrees.

Melissa: 850 degrees? Wow.

Melissa: Yay my first time making pizza!

Amanda: Congratulations!

Melissa: Now I'm hungry!

Melissa: Another cool tidbit about Mozzeria - all of the artwork here is by Deaf artists including David Call, Nancy Rourke, and others.
