Iraqi Forces, ISIS Battle in Fallujah

Hi I’m Kriston Pumphrey and welcome to DTV News on Wednesday, May 25th. Thanks for joining us:

The United Nations is fearing for the safety of 10,000 families in Fallujah, Iraq. Currently, the city is in ISIS control, and Iraqi forces hope to reclaim their territory. On Monday, Iraq’s military commenced an offense to reclaim the city, which is about 40 miles west of Baghdad. The U.N. fears if innocent residents cannot leave the city, they will become the victims. Iraq’s air force has airdropped thousands of “leaflets” into the city.

The leaflets explain that citizens need to leave, and promises innocent civilians a passage through safe corridors which was set up by the Iraqi military. The citizens will be sent to camps outside of the city. The government has also set up hotlines for people to call or text, if they need help evacuating.

Currently, ISIS destroyed most access of communication to the residents. Citizens are urged to wave a white flag over their home if they cannot flee. 80 families have fled the city, using the safe corridors, and are receiving emergency assistance. Women and children are risking their lives escaping. The corridors have been criticized for not living up to expectations, costing the lives of innocent people. The Iraqi Defense Minister believes the war will be over soon; but until then, citizens are fearing for their lives, trying to escape the war-zone city.
