Thunder Bay Centre of the Deaf's VLOG for June Rogers.

‪#‎PSBsuperintendent2015‬

Transcript:

Amanda – Hello, my name is Amanda Ranger. Sign name is A on palm of hand. I am TBCD president. TBCD stands for Thunder Bay Centre of the Deaf. I am also an alumnus of Ernest C Drury School for the Deaf.

Greg - Hi, I am Greg Eyben, sign name, G on the side of the head. I am Vice President of TBCD.

Amanda - Okay, we are here to sign this vlog to June Rogers, the director at PSB. We had heard that the hiring of a new superintendent would be happening very soon which led to a discussion amongst TBCD members because many of us are alumnus of schools under the PBS including ECD, SJW and Robarts.

We, TBCD members, have concerns about the following:

• Transparency – there is a lack of transparency. We knew NOTHING that the hiring of a new superintendent was under way until a vlogger announced that it was under way. Which leads us to our next concern.
• Hiring panel – who is on the hiring panel?? Who are they about to hire?? Do the hiring panel have input from stakeholders?? No, they don’t. So how will they make the right decision? Who are the stakeholders? They are alumnus, former students, current students, parents and many more. We have been in the schools, we got our education from the schools and we even lived at the schools and yet we cannot include our input? Wow, how could you make a decision without our input?? This was one of our discussion as we wonder how it is possible for you to arrive at a decision without our input.

Greg – so true.

Amanda continuing –
• Applicants – who are they? We have no idea. Which means the next person who may be leading our schools, we have no idea who it may be until the person is hired. The process itself really exempts us, which means Deaf children get to see that our input means nothing. This is unacceptable.

So our main concerns are that there is no transparency and no involvement from stakeholders, which means the hiring process is not fair.

Greg – absolutely true.

Amanda continuing –

Now I asked Deaf members what their vision of a Deaf superintendent should include if one is hired. Greg, go ahead.

Greg – Deaf centred

Amanda – fluency in American Sign Language

Greg – Approachable, have the ability to interact with ease

Amanda – which means an interpreter is not needed. Booking a meeting will happen quicker.

Greg – Knowledge of ASL curriculum

Amanda – Understands Deaf Education

Greg – Role model – showing that a superintendent can be Deaf

Amanda – which means Deaf children will be able to look at the superintendent and know that they can become a superintendent if they want to be one.

Greg – have high expectation for teachers and other professionals in the education field

Amanda – which means Deaf children will receive top quality education

Greg – Deaf children will be able to dream high. Both the superintendent and Deaf students will be able to bond and have the ability to understand each other.

Amanda – so this is what the Thunder Bay Deaf community’s thoughts on what should be included in a Deaf superintendent’s qualities. I hope you watch our vlog along with others and read letters with an understanding of why a Deaf superintendent is so important. Thank you for watching.
