ANNA: Today we will discuss institutions of higher education. The ADA applies to Colleges, universities and community colleges. State or local institutions follow ADA Title II. Private institutions follow ADA Title III. Both Title II and Title III require all institutions to provide access to services and equipment. For example, sign language interpreters, CART, or captioning. Higher education institutions are required to provide access to online courses, lectures on campus, workshops, events, training, sports events, extracurricular activities. Higher education institutions are obligated to provide access not just to students, but to anyone who is their intended audience and is deaf. This means schools must accept admission for every deaf and hard of hearing student? NO. Students must be qualified academically to be admitted to the institution. Today, our goal is to show that deaf students not only can get college degrees, they can also get advanced professional degrees, like a Medical Doctor degree! We succeeded in a lawsuit against a Nebraska medical school and now they are required provide appropriate services to a deaf student. This is how the ADA applies to higher education institutions.
