"The Last shall be First and many be called but few chosen" is a phrase from Jesus' teachings in the Bible, found in Matthew 20:16 and Matthew 22:14. It means that the people who are considered last or least in this world may receive the greatest honor in God's kingdom, while those who are first in worldly terms may be last in the kingdom. The second part, "many be called, but few chosen," suggests that while many people are given the opportunity to respond to God's call, only a few will truly accept and be chosen for salvation. Meaning of "The last shall be first and the first last" Opportunity versus acceptance: God offers a calling or invitation to everyone, but not everyone responds to it. True faith is required: Simply being called does not guarantee eternal admission to God's kingdom or a place in the "chosen" group. True faith and acceptance of the invitation are necessary. Biblical context Matthew 20: Jesus tells a parable about laborers who were hired at different times but were paid the same wage. This teaches that God's rewards are not based on worldly effort or status but on His grace. Matthew 22: Jesus tells a parable about a king who invited many guests to his son's wedding feast. Those who were called did not come, so the king invited others, including Gentiles. However, one guest was cast out for not wearing the proper wedding garment, illustrating that a true invitation and transformation are necessary.
