Dear Jose 'Pepe' Cervantes:

It is time for you to resign from your position on the Gallaudet University Board of Trustees.

You have not served Gallaudet well. Your elitist privilege is evident, and your continued presence has contributed to the worsening state of the university. Many Deaf people are deeply disappointed by what they perceive as ego-driven leadership and a detachment from the real needs of the community.

Most concerning of all, academic freedom at Gallaudet is under siege—and you have done nothing to stop it. As a Board member, it was your duty to stand up and defend the university’s integrity, to protect its foundational values. You had the power to act. You chose not to.

This moment calls for accountability. The Deaf community deserves better. Gallaudet University deserves leadership grounded in humility, courage, and cultural responsibility—not silence and self-preservation.

For the sake of the Deaf community, for the protection of Gallaudet’s future, and for your own credibility, it is in the best interest of all that you step down.
