Summary:

My Master of Fine Arts degree is in Visual Art. When I entered the program, they gave me a thick pack of papers explaining the program in detail. I drowned in the pages and pages of English text with very few images. It was a disorienting experience.

Many people think that English equates visual access for the visual mind. It does not. We need images, diagrams, and illustrations to help us process ideas.

My experience in the program taught me that there are actually hearing people with visual minds. They need the same thing we do, but they are accustomed to accepting the status quo.

So for us visual thinkers -- it's very important that when we fight for access, we ask for three things: images, diagrams, and clear in-depth fluent ASL (not English-phrasey). Those things will actually benefit everyone involved.

Postscript:

There are situations where English text is absolutely necessary. I am speaking of adding MORE to what's considered "access."
