Adrean explores the hidden sexism within American Sign Language with two examples - "intercourse" and "menstruation." Within the commonly expressed word "intercourse," the dominant hand has the male designation regardless of sex. It actually should be reversed when a woman is speaking. In the second example, the subtle meaning nonmanual variation of "menstruation" (puffing one cheek) is of something to be ashamed of. The process itself is actually a very normal job for the female body to do in preparation for pregnancy. Those words are examples of terminology that promotes sexism within American Sign Language. Adrean asks women to be aware of their language, to take the time to be thoughtful about their expression -- to encourage the community to create new, positive terms.
