Here’s a biblical framework for understanding "everlasting covenants" and how they are fulfilled—not abolished—in Christ: 🔑 1. “Everlasting” (Hebrew: olam) Doesn’t Always Mean “Unending Forever in Time” In biblical Hebrew, olam can mean: A very long duration or age (Exodus 21:6 – “serve him forever” = lifelong, not eternity) As long as the covenant is in force or until fulfilled (Jonah 2:6 – “earth with its bars was around me forever” – clearly poetic and not literal eternity) Thus, an “everlasting covenant” means: “A covenant of enduring significance, often until fulfilled or replaced by something greater promised by God.” 🧩 3. The Mosaic Covenant Was Not Everlasting While some components (like the Sabbath or feasts) are called “everlasting” within the Mosaic Law, the Law itself was a conditional, temporary covenant: Hebrews 8:13 – “He has made the first [covenant] obsolete.” Galatians 3:19 – “It was added... until the Seed (Christ) should come.” Romans 10:4 – “Christ is the end (goal) of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.” Thus, the Old Covenant was never meant to last forever, but was fulfilled in Christ. ✝️ 4. Jesus Fulfilled the Everlasting Promises All the "everlasting covenants" point to Jesus Christ: Circumcision → inward circumcision of the heart (Rom. 2:28–29) Sabbath → rest found in Christ (Heb. 4:9–11; Col. 2:16–17) David’s throne → eternal King Jesus (Isa. 9:6–7; Rev. 19:16) Priesthood → eternal High Priest (Heb. 7:24–25) Jesus mediates the true “everlasting covenant” (Heb. 13:20) that grants eternal life, not temporary signs. ⚠️ Refuting the Hebrew Roots Movement Misuse The HRM wrongly insists that because covenants like Sabbath or circumcision are called “everlasting,” they must still be practiced the same way today. But: They ignore how Christ fulfills and transforms the covenants. They confuse the sign with the substance. Circumcision was a sign (Rom. 4:11), not the goal. The Sabbath was a shadow (Col. 2:16–17), Christ is the substance. ✅ Conclusion: The True Everlasting Covenant Is in Christ “Now the God of peace... brought up from the dead the great Shepherd... through the blood of the everlasting covenant” (Hebrews 13:20) The New Covenant in Christ’s blood is the ultimate and final covenant. All “everlasting covenants” find their true and eternal meaning in Him.
