Arius, a presbyter (priest) from Alexandria, Egypt, was the central figure in the controversy. He proposed a theological view that challenged the traditional understanding of the relationship between God the Father and Jesus Christ. Arius argued that Jesus, although divine, was a created being and therefore subordinate to God the Father. According to Arius, there was a time when Jesus did not exist, and God the Father created him before the rest of creation. This teaching became known as Arianism.
